The only musicals I know are the ones I watched on Tv, but it is so much different living a 360 degrees experience in a theatre: you can sing out loud, clap your hands, run towards the stage and dance.
I wish I could feel the same emotion soon, taking a seat in front of one of my favourite musical.
Today I would like to talk about one of them, Les Miserables, directed by Tom Hooper in 2012, based on the novel written by Victor Hugo.
Hugh Jackman plays the role of Jean Valjean, the main character, but there are also a lot of other stars, like Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne.
The only word that comes in my mind to describe this film is EPIC. The story itself is full of drama, pathos, strong feelings, passion and struggle and the actors manage to represent all these emotions on stage.
The songs are beautiful: sometimes, when I'm walking, I notice that I'm singing one of them (I'm not crazy, just to let you know): Do you hear the people sing?, I dreamed a dream or On my own.
Apart from the love story, it is interesting to understand the relationship between Jean Valjean, the prisoner, the outlaw, and Javert, the inspector, the prison guard.
Grace and law, absolution and justice, right and wrong fight during the film, as Valjean and Javert do.
It all seems confused: both have a sort of epiphany which weaken the pillars of their beliefs and conscience. Only if you are strong enough to admit you were wrong you can survive.
Another aspect I love is the aim to revolt of the young boys, who want to plan a revolution.
They follow an ideal, they want a real democracy and they are willing to fight for this. But it is not easy because a lot of people give them the cold shoulder.
If you like historical and dramatic musical, Les Miserables is what you are looking for.
Bye for now
Yours, Silvia
