How to get motivated - SOUND OF MADNESS

Yesterday I was looking for a song in my music library on Spotify, called Sound & Color by Alabama Shakes. The order of my songs is not alphabetic, but it is based on the time when I saved them, so, sometimes, it is not so immediate to find the one I want to listen to.

So I clicked on the icon of the magnifying glass, writing the word "sound": the first result was the song I mentioned above, while the second one was a song by Shinedown, Sound Of Madness, which was totally new to me.

The album cover
I was curious, so I decided to listen to it, because there are other Shinedown's song I like, as Cut The Cord. In fact, I was right so, today, I think I could write about it.

I appreciate this kind of songs, because they give you strength both with music and with the lyrics.

As a march, the song starts with the electric guitar and the bass drum: it seems that the guitar tries to imitate it, creating a repetitive sound and filling the empty space between each of its beats.

Then the singer starts to follow them, so, with that fluctuating rhytm, it's like he is "mocking" something, in this case, a particular type of person, the one who feels sorry for himself:

<<Yeah, I get it,
You're an outcast.
Always under attack.
Always coming in last,
Bringing up the past.
No one owes you anything.
I think you need a shotgun blast,
A kick in the ass,
So paranoid. . .
Watch your back!!>>

Then the song changes a bit, it gets more "melodic": we can listen to the cymbals and the bass with the rest of the instruments and also the voice of the singer becomes more higher and scratched, while in the first verse was more plain and deep; the lyrics shows us the situation and these words catch our attention:

<<You think that by crying to me
Looking so sorry that I'm gonna believe,
You've been infected by a social disease.
Well, then take your medicine>>

And then, the powerful chorus, which contains the key to listen to the entire song, the phrase "when you gonna wake up and fight...for yourself".

You don't have to fall into self-pity, the "social disease" which blocks you so that you are not able to face your probems. "The darkest hour never comes in the night", it's unexpected, but you have to be menthally ready to fight.

Sometimes, the greatest obstacle is in our head: we tend to look at what fears us, our weak points, and we convince ourselves we can't overcome what we want to. But if we don't do anything, we can't grow up and learn. It's important to think before the action, but this can't be an excuse to not to act at all: it is better to say "at least, I tried" than "I should have tried".

Enjoy your listening

Yours, Silvia
