As I said, I decided to divide my review into four different posts: so, in this second post I want to talk about the characters of the New Trilogy I like the most, in the next one I will describe my favourite characters of the Old Trilogy, while in the fourth I'll deal with the parts I dislike and I will write some of my outstanding questions (I use the name Old Trilogy for the episodes IV, V and VI, released between 1977 and 1983, while the term New Trilogy for the episodes I, II and III).
THE CHARACTERS I LIKE
(spoilers)
New Trilogy
(episode I, episode II, episode III)
There are a
lot of characters I like, but my favourite one is Qui-Gon
Jinn. Even if he appears only in the episode I, he is the idea I have for a
Jedi master, the perfect combination of wisdom,
courage, internal balance and also freedom. It is a bit different from Yoda, because he listens to the Force and also to his own thoughts. In fact, he believs in Anakin and he wants to train him, even if the other Jedi of the High Council don't agree with him. Moreover, due to the fact that I watched the saga following the
chronological order of the events, the first Jedi I met was him.
Another character I like is Mace Windu, a Jedi master, member of the High Council. I appreciate him especially in the episode II, when he rescues Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme (imprisoned and sentenced to Death by Cound Dooku on Geonosis) and then he kills Jango Fett. In this episode, he seems to be a very good swordsman, brave and self-confident. I like him also because he is able to resist the attraction of joining the dark side, as represented by the unusual colour of his lightsaber (which is purple, a mix of the blue colour of Jedi and the red one of Sith).
Finally, I have to write about Anakin Skywalker, whose growth, from childhood to adulthood can be seen across the episodes. He is a Jedi who becomes a Sith, and not an ordinary one, but Darth Vader. He never forgets his origins and his path: he is always tormented and I think he finds his right place only at the moment of his death, when he decides to save Luke, overpowered by Darth Sidious (episode VI). In the episode III he can't find peace, he knows that Padme will die but he can't realise that he is the cause of her death. He turns into what he wants to defeat and he becomes blind even in front of his master and friend Obi-Wan and his beloved wife.
