I hope you enjoy these posts about Star Wars, even if I know that my review is a bit long: it's because I like this saga so much that I can't write everything in a single post. There are so many things that need to be described and deserve to have an appropriate place in my blog.
Anyway, we are arrived at the post number three, which means that we are dealing with the Old Trilogy, in particular the characters I like of this trilogy (don't miss the next post, which will be about the parts I dislike and my outstanding questions!)
I have already written about the New Trilogy (here to read more) and about the episodes in general (here to read more), so, if you want, you can have a look.
THE CHARACTERS I LIKE
(spoilers)
Old Trilogy
(episode IV, episode V, episode VI)
Unlike the New Trilogy, I have just one favourite character in the Old Trilogy, that is Han Solo. We meet him in the episode IV, while he stays in an infamous pub and he has just hired a job from Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke. At the beginning, he seems to be interested only in money and in paying his debts to Jabba The Hutt. In fact, after helping Luke in the rescue of Leia, imprisoned in the Death Star, and after transporting them to the Rebel Alliance, he goes away, not listenings to the "critics" of his copilot and bestfriend Chewbacca. But he comes back to save Luke during the mission to destroy the Death Star, because he is not cynic and selfish as he seemed. He is heroic, brave and he cares about his friends. Sometimes he can seem too self-confident and also insolent, but everyone knows that they can trust on him and that, behind that facade there is a man with insecurities and fears.
I also like Princess Leia Organa, because she is a warrior. She leads the rebellion against the Galactic Empire, she is strong and she believes in a better future, so far from their present. She knows how to gain respect, even from the free-spirited Han Solo. They, in fact, admire each other for the courage and for the fearless attitude and self-control in difficult occasions: maybe this impulsiveness they share is the reason why they fall in love. She also loves Luke, even before knowing he is her brother, as shown by a moment in which Luke speaks to Leia with his mind (thanks to the Force).
Then, there is the old Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has never lost his faith in the Force, even if he is no more a Jedi Knight. He helps Luke at the very start, teaching him the bases of the Force and helping him to begin his path in the Light Side. In the battle against Darth Vader, he decides that he would be more useful as a spirit, so he let Darth Vader kill him. He is worried about Luke, because, when he is training with Yoda on Dagobah and he wants to stop it to save his friends, he thinks that he is not ready to take on Darth Vader and the power of the Dark Side. Due to his role of master, he is one of the three guide spirits of Luke, together with Yoda and Anakin Skywalker.
The last character I like of this trilogy is Lando Carlissian, the administratotr of Cloud City and of the Tibanna's gas mine on Bespin. and a friend of Han Solo. In fact Han thinks his friend could help him to give them a refuge and to fix the damaged Millenium Falcon. But, unfortunately, Darth Vader makes a deal with him and imprisones Han, Leia and Chewbacca. While Han will be hibernated and given to Boba Fett, Lando helps Leia and Chewbacca to escape from Bespin, together with Luke, C-3PO and R2-D2. His conscious and his friendship make him do so, because he is not evil, he only wanted to act or his conveniency and to be out of the control of the Empire. But he understands there are higher values and so he risks his life trying to save his friends.
